I have over 30 tanks in my collection of dive gear and have made my choices on based on specialized needs for the type of dives that I do. For most of my diving needs I prefer steel tanks and specifically HP100s. I have found that this size tank works perfectly for me. Compared to an AL80 they are a little shorter and that makes them easier to carry, they hold more air giving you a nice reserve over the AL80, they utilize a 300 Bar DIN tank valve with a captured O-ring that is more secure that the standard yoke type of valve (this is important if you are doing wreck penetrations), and they do not become positively bouyant at low air pressure allowing you to dive with les weight on your belt. The HP100 are the same diameter as an AL80 and when I swtich from steel to AL all I have to do is drop two 2 pound soft weights into the non-dumpable weight pockets on the back of my BC to offest the bouyancy and my trim stays the same. What about rust you may ask? Two of my HP100s were purchased used from a shops rental department about 15 years ago and I have since converted them to nitrox and they are still clean as new. You will not have a rust problem as long as you get good air from a reliable source.

I agree, spring fin straps are the way to go, cave and tech divers have been using them for years. Some divers balk at the price of these straps but they are comparing them with the price of a plain generic rubber strap like you would buy for an older style fin. There are so many brands and styles of fins on the market today with quick release plastic buckles that you will find that it is very difficult and time consuming to replace just the strap and that a generic strap may not work, something that you will not want to find out when you are ready to make your entry and break one. Most divers today carry an entire fin strap/buckle assembly in their save-a-dive kit so they can swap out the broken one quickly and easily. Now, if you compare the price of these rubber strap/plastic buckle assemblies to a spring assembly you are in the same price range and the fact that one set of spring straps will last the life of your fins it's a no brainer- go with the spring straps.

Nice article Alex! Last year's ice dive was the most exciting dive I've ever done. I couldn't sleep the night before because I was so nervous. But after my first dive I couldn't wait to get back in the water.

My wet suit kept me plenty warm. I got some goofy advice on the internet but Alex and Joe set me straight. Last year it was warmer under the 12" of ice than at the surface.

Hi Jim

What two sizes were you looking at, i wear the 2xl-3xl version and it fits with even my most thickest undergarment. I would guess you would probably be in the size smaller than i wear. Let me know what sizes you were looking at though.

Alex,
did you try on a suit before ordering? - I was thinking of going to Rochester to try on a Fusion, because I'm right in the middle of two sizes

Even though I've been living and scuba diving in Dominican Republic for more then 4 years, I haven't been at Silver Banks. I've heard a lot about people looking for lost treasures there, but not too much has been said about the whale sanctuary. So thanks for posting it.
