Review: White’s Fusion Drysuit
Posted on Dec, 2009 in Home/Reviews/Review: White’s Fusion Drysuit
Those with drysuits usually hate one thing the most about the suit and that is the suit’s mobility, well say goodbye to mobility issues with the Fusion. The Whites Fusion is the newest innovation in scuba diving equipment and a drysuits particulary, it uses two layers to provide a sleek fit that not only keeps a diver dry but also increases the overall flexibility of the diver.
The way the fusion works is first with it’s drycore layer, this is the portion that keeps the diver dry while diving, this layer is extremely oversized, by roughly about 2 sizes. The next layer is called a skin (made up of different materials, more to come on that later), this layer goes over the dry layer, this layer is also about 2 sizes too small, but it stretches so dont worry. When the suit is not on it’s owner it actually looks funny for how small it looks. Once the two layers are combined the flexibility of the suit compares to no other suit on the market.
When I first tried on a Fusion i was shocked at how easy it was to move around in the thing, the flexibilty was like wearing a thin tropical wet suit. Also to note, the first time i tried the suit on i was wearing one of the thickest drysuit undergarments i could find and i still had better movement than any previous drysuit before. Needless to say i was sold on the concept and prompty ordered a suit for myself.
One of the issues that i first encountered with the Fusion was the boots, the fusion uses what is called a rockboot system, the suit has a sock attached where the foot goes in and then the diver wears a boot over the sock to provide protection against ruining the sock. When i first ordered the suit i ordered it with the whites evo 2 rock boot, however White’s recently released the new Fusion boot, it attaches to the drysuit and stays attached, needless to say i have sent the Evo 3′s back for a pair of Fusion boots.
Now to talk about the skins, currently there are 3 skins in production for the fusion, a sport lycra skin, a neoprene tech skin and a tech skin limited edition. The lycra skin is great for use when traveling as it will cut down on weight, the tech skin is designed to be a heavier duty skin for more durability. The limited edition skin is a beefed up version of the tech skin. Currently whites is testing the new “Bullet” skin, this will be the most suped up version released to date, this will be launched sometime in April 2010.
As i have yet to dive the suit yet keep checking on the blog for the in water review of the suit.
Till next time
Happy Holidays

Alex,
did you try on a suit before ordering? – I was thinking of going to Rochester to try on a Fusion, because I’m right in the middle of two sizes

Hi Jim
What two sizes were you looking at, i wear the 2xl-3xl version and it fits with even my most thickest undergarment. I would guess you would probably be in the size smaller than i wear. Let me know what sizes you were looking at though.
