Ways to Gain Attention Underwater

Let’s say you become separated from your dive buddy, and need assistance immediately. There are two distinct ways to get noticed underwater.  One employs using sound, while the other requires using light.  We’d like to provide you with a few examples, in case you ever find yourself in this situation of needing attention underneath the surface.

Using Sound

When you need to get the attention of your buddy, time really matters.  If something goes wrong with your gear, it is important to be able to obtain attention immediately.  Using sound is a great option, as sound travels very quickly underwater.  A custom utilize for years by divers has been to bang on your tank with either a diving knife, or any object that would make noise, even a rock.  If you do not have access to any of these items, a ‘tank banger’ can be used, which is a ball attached to the cylinder by a cable.  Just pull on the ball, and it will create a loud noise when it hits against the tank.  This is a very low-cost, yet very convenient tool.

Other options for creating sound are specified devices that attach to the inflator hose.  With the push of a button, these devices – such as the Subduck and Scub-Alert, produce loud volume noises and have arrange of about 75 feet in some cases.

Using Light

aquastrobe 1 1 300x300 Ways to Gain Attention UnderwaterAs well as sound works to obtain attention, it is sometimes hard to distinguish where in fact the sound comes from under the water.  Having a strobe light in this situation can be very beneficial.  These lights will not only draw attention, but it is often easier to recognize the direction in which the source is coming from.  Strobe lights can come in many different varieties with different sizes, attachments, and buoyancies.
