First Stage Regulators FAQs

What is the function of a first stage regulator in scuba diving?

The first stage regulator attaches to the scuba tank and reduces the high-pressure air from the tank to a constant intermediate pressure. This controlled pressure is then delivered to the second stage regulator, allowing the diver to breathe safely underwater regardless of the changes in water conditions, depth, breathing needs, and pressure in a scuba cylinder.

What types of first stage regulators are available?

First stage regulators come in two main types: piston and diaphragm. The difference between the two is in the internal mechanism they use to ensure constant outlet pressure and flow. Nowadays, with modern, good-quality regulators, a recreational diver would likely not feel a difference in performance between the two types of regulators, so the choice comes down largely to personal preference.

How do I know if a first stage regulator is compatible with my tank?

Most first stage regulators are available in two connection types: DIN and yoke. DIN fittings screw directly into the tank valve, while yoke fittings clamp over the tank valve. Check your tank type and choose a first stage with a compatible connection or use an adapter if needed.

How often should I service my first stage regulator?

It’s recommended to have your first stage regulator serviced annually or after every 100 dives. Regular servicing by a certified technician ensures that all parts are in good working order, which is crucial for safe and reliable performance underwater.
