Dive Computers FAQs

What is the difference between a dive watch and a dive computer?

A dive watch is a timepiece that is water-resistant and designed to track elapsed time underwater, usually with a one-way rotating bezel. It does not calculate depth, nitrogen levels, or decompression limits.

A dive computer is a device that tracks and displays essential information such as depth, dive time, ascent rate, and no-decompression limits. It uses sensors and algorithms to calculate safe dive limits, making it much more advanced and versatile for dive planning and safety than a traditional dive watch.

Which arm do you wear a dive computer on?

Most divers wear their dive computers on their non-dominant arm to keep their dominant hand free for tasks like adjusting gear or using underwater tools. For example, a right-handed diver would typically wear their dive computer on the left wrist.

Should each diver have a dive computer?

Yes, ideally, each diver should have their own dive computer. This allows each diver to monitor their unique depth, time, and decompression status. Sharing a dive computer is not recommended because different divers have different profiles, and one computer cannot safely track multiple divers.

Should I turn off my dive computer between dives?

Most modern dive computers will turn the display off automatically a few minutes after the end of your dive or some period of inactivity. The device will usually save all your dive data as well as keep tracking your surface interval and monitoring your nitrogen levels. Some models have a shutdown/reset option, that could cause the computer to lose information about previous dives. The same can happen if you remove the computer battery. Hence, doing so is generally not recommended during your dive trip as you can lose the info essential for accurately calculating safe limits for subsequent dives. That being said, these features vary between brands and models (some dive computers, for example, do save dive data between battery changes), so you should read the manual to learn how your model works.

What is the first step in using my dive computer?

The first step in using your dive computer is to read the manual and understand its functions, settings, and display. This helps you set up the computer correctly, including adjusting units, alarms, and dive mode. Before your dive, ensure that it is fully charged or has fresh batteries, and familiarize yourself with how to read and respond to the information it displays during the dive.
