Suunto D5

Suunto has just unveiled an all-new recreational dive computer called the D5. The gadget boasts a clear, high contrast color screen and simple-to-use system with an intuitive, three-button logic to switch between views and settings.

The D5 offers four dive modes to choose from - Air, Nitrox, Gauge, and Freedive - all with clear graphical views, transflective display technology and LED backlight. There is also a tilt-compensated 3D digital compass. In addition to the standard dive features such as depth, dive time, no-decompression limit, safety stop timer, and beep alarms, the D5 has a brand new vibration alarm mode, which is great for underwater videographers or those who just like the quiet.

The device also has all the wireless technology you would expect from a modern millennial ready dive computer. You can take wireless tank pressure readings by pairing the D5 with the Suunto Tank POD. The computer can also be integrated seamlessly with the new Suunto dive log app, which allows you to upload your dives, add photos, share your dive data with friends, and browse other users' dive logs.

Another new feature to the D5 is a rechargeable battery that promises 20-40 hours dive time on a single charge.

Last, but not least, the designers have worked to make the D5 a fashionable computer. Although it is slightly larger than Suunto’s current D model range, the computer’s stainless steel bezel, coupled with mineral crystal glass to protect the full-color MIP display, looks slick and modern. Additionally, you’ll be able to customize the look of the watch to fit your style thanks to interchangeable straps with a quick release spring bar. There is a selection of 22 dive-proof straps to choose from with a further 17 leisure-wear straps. Match your kit or choose between silicon, webbing, and leather for a more casual style.

The D5 is set to go on sale at the beginning of 2019 and will retail at:

  • Black Lime US$899
  • All Black US$899
  • White Clear Stainless Steel Parts US$849
  • Acid black Stainless Steel Parts US$849
