Surfing and Paddling Wetsuits FAQs

Do You Need a Wetsuit to Surf?

If you try surfing for the first time, you will probably be fine in your usual swimsuit. Yet, if you plan on surfing on a more regular basis, a wetsuit will surely come in handy.

In addition to greatly extending your surfing season and allowing you to surf in cooler temperatures, the wetsuit will let you stay on the water longer each time you surf, as it will protect you from both windchill and sun rays.

Do You Need a Wetsuit to Paddleboard?

With paddleboarding and stand-up paddleboarding, the reasons to wear or not to wear a wetsuit are pretty much the same as with surfing. If you plan to occasionally paddleboard only during summer or in tropical climates, you can do so without a wetsuit. However, having one will help to extend your paddling season if you live in a temperate climate and keep you warm in case you fall into the water.

Another big reason to wear a wetsuit or a jacket is UV protection. Do not underestimate the impact of sun rays on your skin. On a SUP, the sun not only shines from the sky but also reflects from the water, so, besides a wetsuit, don’t forget about sunglasses.

What Are the Best Wetsuits for Surfing?

To choose your best surfing wetsuit, start by determining when you are going to surf. For hot summer days, you can use just wetsuit tops for surfing. A sleeveless vest protects only your torso from sunburns, while short- or long-sleeve tops add some protection to your shoulders and arms as well. For transitional seasons, choose a shorty or a fullsuit to add some protection from wind and colder temperatures. As for a winter surfing wetsuit, go for a fullsuit made of 4-5mm thick neoprene, plus a hood, boots, and gloves.

A wetsuit should be made of a very elastic, soft material that will allow you to move freely.

How should a surfing wetsuit fit?

Look for a snug but not too tight fit, similar to a pair of bicycle shorts. A wetsuit should be like a second skin so you can feel the freedom of movement. The best wetsuits for beginner surfers will be front or back zip flexible fullsuit with long sleeves for moderate water, shorty or fullsuit with short sleeves for warmer water.

What Are the Best Wetsuits for Paddle Boarding and SUP?

As we mentioned above, wetsuits are an excellent option for paddleboarding and SUP. But some might still wonder: “Does a wetsuit restrict paddling”? No, it does not if you choose the right one. Look for sleeveless vests with wetsuit paddling shorts for hot weather. A jane, john, or a springsuit will be perfect for transitional seasons. Choose a thick two-piece or full wetsuit for winter paddle boarding. A sleeveless cut won’t restrict movements, and as for warmer wetsuits, look for a more flexible material and a front zipper.

Why Do Surfers Always Wear Black Wetsuits?ᅠ

Black wetsuits are popular because black absorbs heat from sunlight, helping to keep surfers warmer in cool water. Additionally, black neoprene is more resistant to UV rays, making the wetsuit more durable. Black is also less likely to show stains and wear, so it stays looking new for longer.

Do Surfers Wear Anything Under a Wetsuit?ᅠ

Surfers often wear swim trunks, board shorts, or rash guards under their wetsuits for added comfort and ease of dressing. In colder water, some may wear thin thermal layers or neoprene shorts underneath for extra warmth. However, many surfers prefer to wear nothing under the wetsuit, as it provides a close fit and optimal mobility.
